The art of carving and sculpting, using a wide variety of materials ranging from wood to bone and ivory, has always been an important part of Indonesian artistic heritage. This art, too, may have its origins in the ancient religious beliefs of the people. Ancestral and guardian statues are still erected to this day in some remote parts of the archipelago.
